Summer Pet Food Drive

Watch our SHARE program video and see how your donations make a difference!

Marin pets need your help!

The Marin Humane Society has organized a Summer Pet Food Drive to accommodate a significant increase in demand for pet food from low-income pet guardians. Donations will be used to deliver much-needed supplies to the Humane Society's 246 SHARE (Special Human-Animal Relationships) clients.

Requested items include:

  • Small bags of dry cat food
  • Small bags of dry dog food

Small bags are requested since they are easier for our senior clients to handle. Thankfully, we have a great supply of wet food. Donations can be dropped off at MHS (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato).

For more information, please call the MHS SHARE program coordinator at 415.506.6255.

Flyball Class

Sundays, August 1, 8, 22, 29, and September 12
1:30 — 2:30pm

If you have an energetic dog, flyball may be the sport for you!

Flyball is an exciting sport where teams of dogs race head-to-head over four hurdles, hit a spring-loaded box that triggers a ball to be released, catch the ball on-the-fly, and sprint back across the finish line as the next dog passes in. Racing is timed to 100th of a second, and dogs earn points toward titles for races completed.

Flyball is open to all dogs, of all sizes, including mixed breeds. Athletic dogs, large and small, excel in the sport.

Please download this flyer for more information.

Special Marin Presentation of Peaceable Kingdom

The Marin Humane Society's Adoption Outposts

Saturday, August 14
Sausalito Film Festival

Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home (2010) with Filmmaker James LaVeck in attendance, is a riveting story of transformation and healing which explores the awakening conscience of several people who grew up in traditional farming culture and who have now come to question basic premises of their inherited way of life. Presented through a woven tapestry of memories, music, and breathtaking accounts of life-altering moments, the film provides insight into the farmers' sometimes amazing connections with the animals under their care, while also making clear the complex web of social, psychological and economic forces that have led them to their present dilemma. This groundbreaking documentary shatters stereotypical notions of farmers, farm life, and perhaps most surprisingly, farm animals themselves. This film is changing lives.

Tickets are $20 and include an After-Film Reception with a hosted bar and the filmmakers in attendance. The event starts at 1:30pm on Saturday August 14. Please be at the Theater at Cavallo Point by 1:15pm. Seating is limited.

For tickets:
Call the Marin Humane Society Development Office at (415) 506-6263 or send check to MHS, festival tickets, 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato, CA 94949

Agility Distance Handling Workshop

With Jeff Lyons

The Marin Humane Society's Adoption Outposts

Sunday, August 15
8:30AM – 5PM
Check-in at 8AM

This Agility Distance Handling Workshop, taught by Jeff Lyons, focuses on building distance skills and successfully handling 3D (distance, directional and discrimination) sequences from “behind the line” and recognizing & avoiding common “traps” in distance handling.

This workshop is for working teams who have been training in agility for no less than four months and are able to perform all of the agility equipment with the handler in close proximity to their dog, and for auditors of all training levels. The workshop will focus on achieving separation and learning the skills necessary to take on the required distance of typical distance courses like Jackpot, FAST, Gamblers or Chances. The fundamental tools and techniques of handling the 3Ds (distance, directional and discrimination) from behind a distance line will be introduced.

Space is limited to 12 dog/handler working teams; unlimited auditors (auditors may not bring dogs). $90 for working spot; $40 for auditing spot.

Jeff is an agility judge, trainer and seasoned competitor. He has competed in CPE and mainly competes in NADAC, where he typically works his dogs anywhere from 10-20 feet from the dog’s path, and has successfully run whole courses at distances of greater than 70 feet from the dog’s path. He has run Border Collies and a Jack Russell Terrier, and is familiar with handling dogs of varying sizes, running styles and speed.
